Finance advice for a soon-to-be college grad looking at relocation?
I’m about to enter my final year of college (getting a BS in physics) in MN and am thinking about relocating to Cleveland area upon graduating (partly personal reasons, partly as they have a large medical imaging industry). I’m going to graduate at 20- I’ve lived on campus all through college so its not like I have a whole apartment set up, although I will NOT have any student loans or debt (which frees me up quite a bit). My parents would let me to live at home and work in Minneapolis area but I’d prefer to be on my own if I could. I’d like to go about it the right way, though.
How much should I save to cover relocation costs, set-up costs, etc? Any advice on the best way to prepare financially for graduation?
PERFECT STORM for Apartment Mailbox Theft
Think Your Rebate Check is Safe? Better Think Again. Thousands of commercial and apartment mailboxes can be opened easily – too easily. The Bush Tax Rebate and IRS tax rebates will put a check in nearly every mailbox in the country within a four week period. Older commercial and apartment mailboxes have almost no security against this ‘perfect storm’ of mailbox theft opportunity.
How can you handle a medical debt?
I had surgery about a two months ago on my arm. My husband’s health insurance has high deductibles and left us with a bill of over 00. The surgery was an outpatient procedure which was very expensive for a minor one. However, the follow-up care cost the most.
My husband and I are currently in an open chapter 13 bankruptcy. So our available cash is limited for bills. We are almost out of bankruptcy within the next year. Living on almost a third of your available net income has been a challenge but we tightened our belts after the first year by getting a less expensive rental, cutting out unnecessary items. Our car that we had when we filed went bad and we had to purchase a newer vehicle. So any extra money is now tied up in a monthly car payment.
The billing office of the hospital where I had the surgery has been hounding me for a payment or payment arrangement. I tried to explain that we are in a bankruptcy at the moment and would try at least something every month to pay the bill. We had registration renewal and a driver license renewal this month at the cost of almost 0. It’s not much but is hurts when money is tight anyhow.
I’m willing to pay the bill, but medical care costs are ridiculous in this country. My sister had major surgery over 20 years ago and it only cost 00. She had to have rods put into her foot after shattering her ankle. My mom didn’t have to pay hardly any deductibles. My husband just had
a heart monitor done and it cost 00! I did manage to get his hospital to make payment arrangements to pay a month until after we are discharged from the bankruptcy then pay for the co-pay in full afterwards. Our credit score is getting in the good range and we want to be able to rent a nice apartment within a year. Getting a collection on my part might hurt our chances of getting a new place. Why are medical collectors so greedy? They made over 10K from my husband’s insurance. I am not working at the moment. Let them try to sue me. You can’t get blood from a turnip. Just frustrated. Thanks.
What do you do when your boyfriends parents hate you?
My boyfriends parents absolutely HATE me. What do i do about this? If we’re on the phone, they find a lame excuse to interupt. If he’s coming home to visit me [hes 3 hours away with his dad helping him out with his back problems AND hes 23 and we've been together A WHILE], his dad tells him he doesn’t want him coming to visit me because he thinks ill abduct him! WTF! thats just nonsense! They are ruining our relationship and he knows it but they’re really helping him out financially as long as he helps his dad out. He isnt in debt but they’re helping him safe so when he comes home in a few weeks he can get an apartment and not have to live with his old roomates that screwed him over. How do i handle this?
How to buy a house when you graduate college?
I’m still in college but I would like to get a head-start on learning what I have to do to buy a home when I graduate. My fiance and I will graduate next year, May 2011. We know where we want to live as we both have pretty much found jobs in the area and it’s also where we grew up so our families are nearby. We currently live in an apartment that my father owns, so we live there for free until we get on our feet. Once we graduate we can stay there as long as it takes us to get where we need to be financially. It’s a huge help and I am so thankful because of it. But eventually we want to get our own home. Here is some information I have about us:
–I’ll have about 19K worth of college loans when I graduate, he will have about the same or a little more
–I’ll start out making around 30K-40K a year with my communications job. He is looking to get a job with the state: mechanic, sheriff or corrections officer.
–I have pretty good credit. I have one major credit card, a cell phone, and Kohl’s Dept. Store credit card (this has a 0 balance, we pay it off every month)
–We do not have children.
–We would like to buy a house in the 100K-295K price range.
Am I leaving anything out? I can put more information if it would help?
Do you have any advice, experiences you’d like to share? Anything would be helpful. We’re just concerned about how we’re supposed to start our lives with all this college debt under our belts. We’ve been told about consolidating and FHA loans, anyone familiar with these?
My boyfrind is getting divorce, but ex-wife has been creating a lot of debts on his credit cards and 4 business?
she has been spending so much money on his debts.it is now limited and we cannot even rent own our apartment now.
How can I attempt to fix my credit from mistakes I made in college?
When I was pursuing my undergraduate degree, I was an idiot when it came to credit cards. To make a long story short, I looked as credit cards as "free money" so needless to say, a lot of financial mistakes were made. I also have some medical bills from a few years back when I did not have health insurance. To guesstimate a grand total of all of my debt I would say, on the high side, around 15 K.
Of course, as I grew up, I realized my stupidity and how important good credit is in all aspects of life. But just because I’ve grown up, doesn’t mean my debt problems have went away. Now I am in Graduate School and dealing with the problem of finding a supplementary loan source to cover tuition.
I have heard all the advertisements for debt consolidation agencies, and things of that nature, but when i have looked into some of them, it seemed more like a scam than anything else. I have also thought about declaring bankruptcy, but from what I have learned about that, it will effect your credit negatively for at least five years. I would not be able to lease/buy a car lease a house or rent an apartment, as well as other necessary things.
So I am at a loss, I really do want to start working on these problems, and I think if I could consolidate it all into one monthly payment, or get some of it reduced that would help me allot.
I am looking for some advice on options I might have, organizations that might help, or any insight anyone can give me on how to tackle this problem.
Thanks
