Christians: How do you know when you're becoming materialistic and how do you handle it?

Okay, here’s my particular situation. My husband and I live in a way that I would consider frugal. We eat out once a week, otherwise I cook all of our meals. We tithe, put a lot (considering what we make — not like, millions) in savings and are almost done with *all* of our debt (student loans, car). This came out of necessity from us being relatively poor (no money in savings then) and has continued.

This Christmas, I’ve gotten a couple of nice gifts. A couple of checks and things. I spent *all* of it already.

This small spending spree has caused me to think about things differently — like, maybe I *can* wear cute clothes all the time, etc. Things I’d kind of given up the dream on.

I guess I’m concerned because I don’t feel like I accurately understand what materialism is. Compared to some in the US, maybe I’m not so materialistic — but I’m worried my view is skewed because we are so rich here!

So – What is materialism and how do you deal with it in your own life?

Has anyone ever dealt with (CCCS)credit counseling services? How bad is it for your credit?

I know these types of debt consolidation plans aren’t very good for your credit but my credit is completely shot and I have a fair amount of debt.Just how bad does it look on my credit? What about after the debts are all paid off?Are they trustworthy and legitimate?Do they do as they promise? What was your experience with them? Are there plans reasonable so quality of life doesn’t drop too badly?
How can I find out thier contact number in my area to meet them in person?I would prefer to work with them that way.
My credit report is full of charge offs and late payments,2 judgements and a bankruptcy from 2001.I’ve been a financial disaster for many years but have finally "grown up" and am ready to truly tackle and repair this mess. Many of my "bad" marks will be off in the next 2-3 years.I have a current car loan but no mortgage or active credit cards.I have several bounced checks in chex systems as well.I’m hoping to have a good enough rating to obtain a mortgage at a halfway decent interest rate within in the 3-4 years.

What are your feelings on a couple sharing a checking account ?

When I got re-married 3 years ago, I was almost debt free. After the "I-do’s " My wife talked me into a joint checking account. Now I really regret it, she spends OUR money like we have plenty of it. She pays bills late, writes hot checks and has a terrible E-bay habit to name a few things. I now really regret doing this, but I love my wife and want her to be more responsible. I also know the flaming backlash I will recieve when I tell her I’ve decided to keep a seperate account.
So, how would you handle this one? Any experience with this ?

Can anyone refer me to a good debt consolidation center?

I have all sorts of debt. 3 closed checking accounts and one closed savings account, a closed credit card account, and four bounced checks. Does anyone know of a solid debt consolidation firm that can help me? Most won’t handle overdrawn bank accounts, and I can’t find one for the life of me. The total debt is somewhere around ,000. The sad thing is that I am a college student who got in trouble with gambling, and now I’m trying to come clean. Please advise! Thanks in advance!

Gambling problem with Mom and no one sees it?

My Mom is at retirement age. They built their dream home a few years ago, despite my advice that entering your twilight years you want to be debt free. Now all of a sudden the house is on the market. A real estate sign is in the front yard and they never even told me.

My Dad has gone back to work at a job that hardly pays anything, after 35 years of working for a pension. My Mom can’t seem to be found during the day. We try calling her and even driving around looking for her. She always says she was at Wal-mart or the grocery. She has even lied and said that she was with me when she was not. We believe that she is going to the casino.

I was visiting her a couple of weeks ago and every time the phone would ring she would lift the receiver and just hang up (without ever breaking eye contact with me). I finally asked her what she was doing and she said that it was just "telemarketers" and not to worry.

She is always unavailable during the first 10 days of the month because that is when their pension check and ss checks come in. Near the end of the month she seems very stressed and claims that she doesn’t even have money for gas.

Now, keep in mind, this is a couple that says they need to sell their home because they feel "strapped". They have over K per month coming in and live in a 0K custom built home and they have nothing. She can’t seem to get her bills paid on time, or she only pays half complaining that the electric company "overcharged" them. My borther and I have both sat her down to talk to her, but she refuses to talk with us about finances.

They need our help to do projects around their house to get it ready to sell, but they refuse to pay someone to do it. Instead, she takes the money and goes to the casino and calls us to help around the house. She then gets angry when we tell her she is no different than we are to hire someone to get things done.

I guess I am lost. What should I do? How should I approach this with her? They want to sell their house, but can’t give a reason. I am afraid when they do sell any equity they receive at closing will go right to the casino. They have no plans where they are going to live or anything. I love my parents, but I am not going to let them blow their lives apart and then move into my home.

Can somebody give me some ideas on what I should do?

Thanks.

FYI. My Dad protects her and does not think she has a problem. We have talked with him, but he says it is their business.
fah-q – What a great answer! That is exactly what I am trying to do. I want them to save all of "nothing" that they have so that I can have..nothing! You are such an idiot. I don’t want them to end up in bankruptcy or foreclosure or completely destitute. They have worked their whole lives only to be throwing it away on an additiction and you, with your wonderful wisdom enlighten me and open my eyes to the fact the I am a "gold digger". Obviously you have never worked for anything in your life since you can’t understand my concern. You shouldn’t be wasting peoples time here, but instead looking at your own life.

I can't stop prescreened credit offers?

I get a ton of credit offers in the mail. I have called the 800 number to opt out. That was four months ago. I am pretty much debt free owing almost nothing and plan to keep it that way. One credit card is good enough for me and I do not want to be bothered with more credit offers. I get checks for several thousands dollars for me to cash at my bank to start a loan and that is scary. If those checks fall in the wrong hands; I will be screwed.
I am at the point of writing legal threats to creditors to stop soliciting prescreened offers.

Is the “opt out” law a joke or can I sue them? Is there a letter template I can use to demand money for being a nuisance? I hate to write a letter to each credit offer, listed on the back of the offer letter. I am willing to sue them for wasting my time. I live in Orange County, Ca. USA. Any advice would be great or web page referral. If you are getting the offers too let me know. Maybe a class action will make the “opt out” stand out tough.

Antirion gave the best answer now to take his advice, how do I finance my divorce when ex trashed my credit?

I had 20 years of absolutely perfect credit. When I informed my husband in Oct. 2000 that I was filing for divorce, I was prepared. I was debt free, I paid all my bills and paid off all my debts. Unfortunately for me I was unaware that my ex would set me up and I would be arrested that night. He smiled an evil smile as the police handcuffed me and took me to jail. All it took was that one night in jail he had control of everything, I was let out in the morning and at the hearing I was placed on the no complaint list. He, my ex destroyed all my ID, took my credit cards and withdrew the maximum cash advance’s they would allow and closed our joint bank account. All the checks bounced that I had sent out to pay our bills. Now, I can’t get a loan and I can’t have a bank account. At present I have retained one attorney for the restraining order hearing, one court appointed attorney for the harrassment charge and now I need to come up with a 2500.00 retainer for the divorce attorney.
