How worried should I be about a credit check? I am a new grad who has terrible credit from too much credit?
So I recently graduates from college with a bachelors in engineering from a great school. During my sophomore and freshman year I got a bunch of credit cards, used them all up and never paid them. Today, I have a credit school of 490 and a bunch of negative marks and 2 judgements on my credit. I just hired a debt consolidation company to help me to manage (not expunge because I want to take full responsibility for this foolish error) my debt and get it back in order. It is about 30,000 in debt. My big dilemma is that I just got a job offer from a major utiliy company in Minnesota and I am horrified that my job offer will be rescinded despite my excellent degree and background because of the mistakes of my youth. Am I being paranoid or realistic? I have spent years cultivating my background ot make myself the ideal candidate in every other way. I have spent time overseas learning new languages, lots of technical jobs, held leadership positions and founded community service organization and I feel like if I am turned down because of my credit, then my degree is worthless and I might as well work at McDonalds. I do not feel I am entitled to a job or a hig hsalary or anything because I went to college but how am I ever supposed to fix this issue if no one will hire me to make enough money to fix my credit?
The job offer has not be rescinded but I am worried it could be because of my poor credit. I was up front about it and explained my background to the hiring manager but he said he is not that worried about it and the ywould really like to have me
The company I hired was a debt management firm they basically just call the creditors to negotiate down my debt and then agree to a a certain monthly payment for each. I did not get a loan because I have heard they are a bad idea. I just wish I was smarter earlier own but it wasnt until the end of my college career than I started to understand credit cards and debt which was my fault. I want to pay off the debt because I feel so guilty about not paying these people their money when I know I owe them
Yes, I have a college degree and while engineers are historically bad at english and grammar, I was not really worrying about spelling mistakes when I typed this
Tough decision….two job offers which one to take?
The first one if for a health care company. It would be for 3 grand less then the other job. I wouldn’t have to work weekends or nights. I also wouldn’t have any customer contact, I would be doing claims. It also wouldn’t offer any extra pay incentives.
The other job offer is more money (3,000 more). I have worked for this company before. However I would have to work one weekend day a week, and its also for credit card customer service. Phone work and back to back calls. Actually I worked this position before, but they now have different systems. There is the opportunity to make extra money. It would include selling and also be based off metrics ( call quality, call time) This company however due to the economy will not be giving out raises for the next two years.
About me: I have worked for financial companies for the past 7 years and have always been in a heavy customer contact positions. I am good at working on phones but don’t enjoy it. I am looking to go into the health care field for a long term career either by getting my CNA or going into medical billing and coding. Money is a influential factor to me, but my spouse makes a decent amount of pay. With his salary we can pay our bills and have a bit left over for groceries, but are not able to pay off any debt or have extra money for fun outings. Paying off all of our debt in the next two years is one of our goals. We are looking to be debt free. I have however been unemployed for the last month (laid off) and have really learned how to save and shop better.
I am just so torn between the two. It’s really weird to have no job offers then two pop up at the same time. I really like the fact for having no customer contact, but I know we can also use any extra money. It’s really down to the point of choosing money or happiness.
Any advice is greatly appreciated….what do you think I should pick…also which one would you pick and why? Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and your response. ![]()
Thinking about renting my house to save money and get out of debt?
I have a townhouse that I’m thinking about renting out. I’m preparing to move to Florida within the next 6 months. I’ve been applying for jobs in Florida and I got my first feed back today from one of the jobs I applied to. My girlfriend (lives in Florida) and I are planning to get married next year and I currently live in Missouri. We are trying to save money by freeing up my mortgage to renters and me staying with a good friend until I get a job offer in Florida. I’m currently paying 0 a month for mortgage and plan on moving with a good friend of mine and paying him 0 a month to live with him until I get a job offer. Not only will I be saving 0 with renters but I will save an additional 0 in not having to pay for electricity, water, and cable bill for a total savings of almost 00 a month. I’m also thinking about doing this because it will help pay down on my debt that I have. I just need some advice because renting my house I know there are negatives to that and also too I will give up my privacy by staying with a friend. I need thoughts and ideas of whether if this is a good decision to rent my house. (Note: I’m not in a position to sell my house at the moment financially with paying the realtor fees)
