Is it legal for debts that occured before your 18th birthday to show up on your credit report?

When I was 17, I went to the urgent care office of my hospital to have an injury looked at. We paid the co-pay, but at the time, my medical bills were sent to my father because I used his company’s insurance policy. I told him what had happened and he said okay. All of this occurred in June of 2004.

Last month, I noticed a new item on my credit report. It’s the only derogatory item on my report and I don’t think it belongs there. Apparently, this new account was reported by a collection agency that bought the account from another collection agency. I never received a bill from the hospital, or either collection agency. As soon as I found out about the debt, I paid it, but should it even have found its way onto my credit report if I never received a bill and the debt originated before I turned 18? If it shouldn’t be there, I am going to dispute it in writing.

Does the Statute of Limitations apply to all debts?

I’m talking anywhere from Medical Bills to unpaid balances from an old checking account. Don’t judge me… none of my debts are anywhere near to reaching their SOL, nor do I plan on waiting them out until then. I’m just curious.

Can you be garnished twice from the same paycheck for different outstanding debts?

my fiancee get’s money taken out of his paycheck each month for child support.. he just got a garnishment summons today for back medical bills. are they able to take both out of his paycheck?? we live in the state of Virginia.

Filing for Bankruptcy?

My fiance and I had set our wedding date. (6 months from now.) However, he had been hospitalized recently and has been diagnosed with a life threatening disease. His insurance coverage was very minimal and we have medical bills well into the hundred thousands. We would like to move up the wedding date because we want our life together to start now. However, he does not want me to incur the medical bill debt. I work at a very, very, small private school and make just enough to cover rent. No more, no extra. If we get married and I incur the debt, would we be able to claim bankruptcy as a couple? The disease is disabling, he more than likely won’t be able to work. I have no assests other than a 14 year old car that is probably only worth 0 for the scrap metal. Any advice would be appreciated. IS there anyone I could call that could advise for free?

Debt consolidation?

My husband and I are thinking of consolidating our bills, but we don’t know where to start. Including credit cards, small personal loans, furniture that we had financed, and medical bills, it’s only about ,000, but our interest rates are so high, we want to try to change that. We spoke with CCCS (Consumer Credit Couseling Services), but I’m kind of ‘iffy’ about that. I would love to be able to just take out a loan for ,000 and pay everything off, but neither one of us have good credit, so I don’t know what to do. We both have scores of pretty close to 525.
Also, we do not own a home, we’re renting.
Any advice?

Can we use a first time home buyers loan to consolidate other debts?

We would like to consolidate recent medical bills and a small student loan with a first time home buyers loan. We are preapproved for ,000 more than what we are looking to buy but are told that we cannot get cash back.

I need advice on step#2 of Dave Ramsey's Total Money makeover. Can you help?

I am now on step #2 of Dave Ramsey’s book The Total Money Makeover, and I’m not sure where to start. My wife and I had recently paid off our credit card debt which was up over ,000 and now we are trying to become debt free completely. We paid this off before we started this program, and now the debt that we have left is a Student loan with 6,998.99 owed with a min. of 72 dollars a month. Medical bills with 6,569.30 owed with a min. of 100 a month. Lastly a ridiculous auto loan with 15,569.20 owed at a min. of 353.30 a month. My concerns are that with starting with the smallest debt which is the medical loan is that It doesn’t look like the medical bills will ever stop piling up so how will I pay that off. We already have a scheduled surgery for my daughter coming up which is going to add to that, and my wife is dealing with a kidney disease that is going to keep adding up the bills also. We had also discussed selling the car to try and lower that debt, but we owe about double than the car is worth so that scenario really isn’t going to work. Does anyone have any suggestions for what to do. We are a family of four that barely brings home 40,000 a year. I really want to be able to get to the next steps in the book, but at this current stage I don’t see how It can happen in the next couple of years. Thank you so much!

Please help. We are about to receive $100,000!?

Ok, so, my husband and I are about to receive 0,000, basically as a wage bonus. Long story, but, the money is due by late this year or early next year.

We live in a very rural area, we are a farm/ranch family and earn a very modest income. About 26,000 for a family of 4. Our problem is this:

My husband wants to pay off all of our debt, which right now is about ,000 to ,000. Buy a boat, and basically enjoy life. There is nothing wrong with that of course in theory. It would be wonderful to be completely debt free. But, we are butting heads, as, I want to invest the money in some way. We hold a lease with option to buy on a section of land that would be useful to own. Although it would sell for about 0,000, we could get a good ways toward owning it. I know that is not exactly investing, but, at least we would own something that appreciates, instead of just owning our vehicles. The other thing I have been thinking about is buy a duplex in town. We live in a college town, so, rentals usually do pretty well.

Anyway, hope you all followed that, I would really love any advice you may have!
btw: We don’t have a mortgage… The debt is about 00 credit card, 00 medical bills and the other ,000 is for our vehicles and a semi truck. (ranch purposes)
I just feel like if we do something to create income with the money right now, we will not have to worry about having debt later! If we pay off the vehicles, etc.. they will eventually need to be replaced, and, we have not actually bought anything that would generate an income!

How does debt consolidation work?

I am looking online to see if I can find a place that can consolidate my debt. All I am finding are places for credit card debt. Are there any places that just do general debt consolidation? I have only have two credit cards and the majority of my debt is medical bills, but it doesn’t seem like they take care of the medical bills according to all these websites. Any help is appreciated!!
