Is credit/debt consolidation a scam? The commercials always sound so stereotypical scam like. Do they work?

I always hear commercials on tv/radio about debt consolidation and such, and they always sound so shady and scammy.

I have about in a decades worth of bills, including a credit card, utilities, etc (i was bad with my money when i finished high school) and i wanna know if these "not for profit" companies that are offering these services are worth it? I dont understand either why they’re not for profit, that makes it sounds even shadier. Are these owned and controlled by credit companies to get their money back or what?

Any one have experience with this?

What are your feelings on a couple sharing a checking account ?

When I got re-married 3 years ago, I was almost debt free. After the "I-do’s " My wife talked me into a joint checking account. Now I really regret it, she spends OUR money like we have plenty of it. She pays bills late, writes hot checks and has a terrible E-bay habit to name a few things. I now really regret doing this, but I love my wife and want her to be more responsible. I also know the flaming backlash I will recieve when I tell her I’ve decided to keep a seperate account.
So, how would you handle this one? Any experience with this ?

Am I wrong to feel this way??!!??!!?

I know this isn’t NB and Baby, but I like all of your advice…

My hubby and I viewed a vehicle approximately 3-4 weeks ago. Very, very, very nice vehicle. Well I’ve still been deciding if I want to spend that kind of money on a vehicle when we’re almost vehicle debt free. Anyway my hubby mentions it to his sister, who in turns goes and purchases this vehicle. "BUT IT WAS MINE!!!!" LOL

Just a little background on her….
At the daycare she uses, if she doesn’t have the money to pay, she doesn’t pay. She doesn’t double up the next week, she just doesn’t pay at all. Her father-in-law financed the home she lives in, so when she doesn’t have the money, she doesn’t make a "house payment", which puts not extra interest towards her "payoff". She seems to be constantly borrowing from my mother and father-in-law when she’s hit a rough spot.

My husband and I have EXCELLENT credit and work very very hard to have the things that we do. Even with EXCELLENT credit, this payment for us would have been well over 0 a month.

First I’m mad/upset because that was the the vehicle I wanted, and secondly because I bust my ass for what seems like nothing!!!

Am I just PMS-ing (as my husband states) or is this a legitimate reason to be annoyed?

I’m a big girl so let me have it…lol.

Thanks!!

Gambling problem with Mom and no one sees it?

My Mom is at retirement age. They built their dream home a few years ago, despite my advice that entering your twilight years you want to be debt free. Now all of a sudden the house is on the market. A real estate sign is in the front yard and they never even told me.

My Dad has gone back to work at a job that hardly pays anything, after 35 years of working for a pension. My Mom can’t seem to be found during the day. We try calling her and even driving around looking for her. She always says she was at Wal-mart or the grocery. She has even lied and said that she was with me when she was not. We believe that she is going to the casino.

I was visiting her a couple of weeks ago and every time the phone would ring she would lift the receiver and just hang up (without ever breaking eye contact with me). I finally asked her what she was doing and she said that it was just "telemarketers" and not to worry.

She is always unavailable during the first 10 days of the month because that is when their pension check and ss checks come in. Near the end of the month she seems very stressed and claims that she doesn’t even have money for gas.

Now, keep in mind, this is a couple that says they need to sell their home because they feel "strapped". They have over K per month coming in and live in a 0K custom built home and they have nothing. She can’t seem to get her bills paid on time, or she only pays half complaining that the electric company "overcharged" them. My borther and I have both sat her down to talk to her, but she refuses to talk with us about finances.

They need our help to do projects around their house to get it ready to sell, but they refuse to pay someone to do it. Instead, she takes the money and goes to the casino and calls us to help around the house. She then gets angry when we tell her she is no different than we are to hire someone to get things done.

I guess I am lost. What should I do? How should I approach this with her? They want to sell their house, but can’t give a reason. I am afraid when they do sell any equity they receive at closing will go right to the casino. They have no plans where they are going to live or anything. I love my parents, but I am not going to let them blow their lives apart and then move into my home.

Can somebody give me some ideas on what I should do?

Thanks.

FYI. My Dad protects her and does not think she has a problem. We have talked with him, but he says it is their business.
fah-q – What a great answer! That is exactly what I am trying to do. I want them to save all of "nothing" that they have so that I can have..nothing! You are such an idiot. I don’t want them to end up in bankruptcy or foreclosure or completely destitute. They have worked their whole lives only to be throwing it away on an additiction and you, with your wonderful wisdom enlighten me and open my eyes to the fact the I am a "gold digger". Obviously you have never worked for anything in your life since you can’t understand my concern. You shouldn’t be wasting peoples time here, but instead looking at your own life.

How does account settled for debts in collection affect your credit?

When a negative item in your credit report is settled because you paid it off, how greatly does your credit increase as compared to if if still not settle and in collection? Can the "account settled" be completely removed from the report?

Is it better to pay off the debt in full or settle for less? How significant is this to determine the FICO score (settle in full or settle for less?) Please help, thank you.

Is it possible to have collection accounts erased from your credit report?

I want to pay off several credit card collections accounts. I want to handle them myself and not utilize a debt consolidation program because I’ve heard that a "settle" on your credit report still looks bad. How would I go about paying the accounts off AND having them removed? Also, do I have to pay the accounts in full to have the collections removed or can I just pay a high percentage of what is due. ( like 80% )
If the collection agency is willing to remove the collection from your account, will it look like I don’t have credit at all? I have one credit card that I am keeping open, but the others are closed already.
Any ideas anyone? I plan on being debt free by January. :)
I don’t want the accounts removed. I want them to erased the negative account info.
I don’t want the accounts REMOVED. I want to STATUS TO BE CHANGED.
My friend had it done, but i want to know if it is common for a collection agency to do so.

I just said that I don’t want to use a debt management or consolidation agency….
I’ve heard that you can have the accounts removed, but that it needs to be in writing.
Supposedly, there is no law that prohibits a collection agency from removing it from you credit.

Desperate plea for advice on my seemingly endless single life.?

Here’s the story. I broke up w/ my ex in ’05, after four years living together. There were numerous reasons we split, that presently seem very trivial or just plain stupid. (You live and you learn.) Since then I’ve been experiencing the humbling effects of the saying "you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone". Which is right on the money, I might add.
Fastforward four years and I haven’t even tried to ask another girl out. No dates, no hangin out, no relationships period. I’ve pretty much turned inot a workaholic and have been souly concentrating on getting my bills payed off and debt free. At the same time it’s been an extremely depressing and lonely period of my life too.
Which leads to my problem. I’ve been single for long I lost a lot my self confidence when it comes dating or just trying to meet someone I like period. I know self confidence is an important ingrediant in attracting someone. I know I look for self confidence in a potential girlfriend too. I just can’t seem to break my confidence issue, even when I have other possitive things going on in my life that should be helping. The missing piece in my life right now is my "girl".
I greatly appreciate the fact you took the time to read and respond. Although your advise isn’t bad, Natasha, I’m more of the baby sitter when it’s "dude’s" night out, ha. I make sure everyone gets home safe, which always leads to me goin home alone. Thats ok though, since I’m more interested in Mrs. Right, not right now.
Thank you, N!C for letting me know I’m not the only one in such a miserable state of being. I wish the best of luck to you as well. At least we have our bills paid off, lol. Someone’s has to find that attractive.

How Do You Split Newly Married Finances?

How have you handled your finances when you got married? What did you do about previous debts, separate incomes and bills?

I would like to know how most people have arranged their money issues when getting married … were their initial arguments over money? What were they and how did you resolve them?
hahahaha, typo – "there" even.
